The Most Active Volcano in Guatemala.
Day 1
We begin our day with breakfast at the Quetzaltrekker office in Xela. From here we make our way to the bus terminal and catch a bus toward the coast. At the "Boca Costa", where the mountains meet the coastal plain we disembark and catch a pick-up to the starting point of the hike. We begin hiking in el Viejo Palmar, which was destroyed by volcanic eruption in 1902. It was later rebuilt only to be destroyed by earthquake in 1976, it has since been abandoned and is an ideal site to witness the power of nature.
After viewing some of the sights around the old village we make our way across the lava flow and cross a narrow but raging river. Those who wish may take a quick swim, before heading off once again on the trail towards the volcano. The route takes us through a shaded coffee and banana plantation and back out onto the lava flow, which destroyed the village so many years ago. We then hike across an open plain until we once again enter into plantation land abundant with rare bird species and other wildlife. We break for lunch at a steep gorge, which is constantly changing due to the frequent flash floods caused by heavy rain and constantly moving soil. After lunch we enter into a more remote zone. This area is also used to grow fruits for the plantation but is left to grow wild. After hiking up through this lush jungle type vegetation we arrive in the late afternoon at our campsite, with some wonderful views of the constantly erupting volcano. On arrival at the site we set up camp and begin preparing our evening meal. After dinner we sit and watch the volcano erupt, spitting out huge glowing boulders and volcanic rocks. We retire to our tents at around 9pm.
Day 2
After a memorable night with amazing views of lava and gas eruptions from the Santiaguito volcano,we start with a hearty morning meal, to get the necessary energy to make our way back. We clean up the site and we begin hiking back down the trail. Before arriving again at el Viejo Palmar, we take a short detour to a beautiful lagoon where we enjoy a much-deserved swim and eat lunch while enjoying one last view of the most active volcano in Guatemala. After lunch, we cross the river and one last bridge to the starting point of our trek. Here we take a pickup back to the highway where we catch a bus back to Xela, arriving back at the Quetzaltrekker office in the mid-afternoon.
