The volcano with a view of three countries
After a hearty breakfast in the
office we leave León for a six hour bus ride to the westernmost
point of Nicaragua where a peninsula created by volcan Cosigüina
stretches out into the Golfo Fonseca. Volcan Cosigüina
was once the tallest volcano in Central America until it was decimated by a powerful
eruption in 1835. Ashes from the eruption fell as far
as Mexico and Jamaica and it was heard as far away as Rivas.
Around 2pm we set off for the top and reach the crater's edge four hours later in time for an amazing sunset over the Golfo Fonseca. From here the view of the crater is incredible; it has a diameter of more than 2 km and 500 meters below the edge rests a huge crater lake. From the top one can see Nicaragua, Honduras, and El Salvador at the same time, not to mention the Golfo de Fonseca and the Pacific Ocean.
Next morning after packing our stuff and having breakfast we hike down to Potosi and relax in the crystal clear springs before enjoying lunch at a local comedor. The area is lush and green and filled with wildlife and is one of the last places on the Pacific Coast where the Scarlet Macaw can be found in the wild. We then board a local bus for an hour and make our way to the top of the Estero Padre Ramos where we meet up with a local guide and boat captain for a two hour estuary and mangrove tour through the nature reserve as the sun slowly sets over the Pacific. We then walk down Jiquilillo's perfect beach until we reach our final destination of the tour, one of two great hostels where you can enjoy a cool drink after two busy days. How long you spend at the beach? Up to you!
Start at 6:15 am in Quetzaltrekkers office
Back two days later at 2:00 pm in Quetzaltrekkers office.
