Watch the lava under a full moon
As the glowing lava is best visible in the dark and the trails are well lit up by the light of the full moon we offer a monthly special to volcán Telica.
Every month when the moon is full we climb in the darkness of the night under a sky of stars to the top of this volcano.
We leave León at night by private transport to the village where the hike starts. With only the full moon to light up the paths we walk through cornfields and forest till we arrive at the crater before sunrise. While it is still dark we peek into the spectacular, more than 130 meter deep crater with glowing lava in the bottom. We wait for the sun to rise, have breakfast and then start our way down to the village San Jacinto. In the village we visit the famous bubbling mud pools, have lunch in a local comedor and get on a bus back to León.

Back next day at 2:00 PM in Quetzaltrekkers office.

Cost of hike: 30 US$
This hike leaves whenever we have a minimum of two persons signed up and enough guides to do the hike. You have to sign up two days before the hike at, at least 3:00 pm.

• Personal travel insurance.

• Costs incurred due to accident, illness or any other unforeseen circumstances.

What you should bring:
• Hiking boots
• Backpack
• Warm and dry clothes
• Rain gear (only in rain season)
• Hat
• Sun screen
• Mosquito repellent (only in rain season)
• Flashlight or headlamp
• Passport or copy of Passport and valid entrance stamp of Nicaragua

Any of the above items that you do not have we will do our best to provide.

All hikes are leaded by a minimum of two guides. In general our guides are bilingual and have lived in Nicaragua for some time, working in tourist services, social and development work etc. The tour leaders are happy to explain the different cultures that you encounter and the significance of places that you visit. They will accompany you throughout the tour, ensuring a smooth, stress-free, safe and enjoyable time.
Quetzaltrekkers uses local transport and purchases food provided on trips from local markets and shops when possible.
