El total de contagiados hasta el 2 de junio era de 5,586 casos en Guatemala, once días después, los datos casi duplican, el 13 del mismo mes asciende a 9,491 casos. El promedio de contagio en los últimos cinco días es alrededor de 350 casos, en total han fallecidos 367 personas en su mayoría adultos desde que inició la pandemia.

There were 5,586 total infections in Guatemala on June 2nd. Eleven days later, the number has almost doubled: by the 13th of June there was an increase to 9,491 cases. The average infections over the last five days is around 350 cases, and in total there have been 367 deaths (mostly adults) since the pandemic began.

Según los datos de contagio desde que dio inicio hace tres meses, no hay certeza hacia el comportamiento de la epidemia en el futuro, en los últimos días se nota masivos contagios, se desconoce si ha llegado al punto más alto o son otros días de contagios, tampoco se sabe si hay un descenso en el futuro o más aumento de casos y más sorpresas. Los fallecidos en los últimos cinco días se cuentan por decenas a diario, motivo de preocupación.

Based on the data we have, there is no certainty about the future behavior of the pandemic. In the last 11 days, massive numbers of infections have been seen, but it is unknown if we have arrived at the peak or if there are more days of infection increases. The deceased in the last five days are counted in the dozens daily, which is cause for concern.

El gobierno central hace sus mejores esfuerzos por manejar la pandemia, aunque se queda muy corto por las múltiples demandas que desencadena la enfermedad, se nota un desgaste, contradicciones, lentitud, falta de coordinación inter-intitucional, corrupción, intereses de otros sectores económicos por sacar provecho, mientras la mayoría de guatemaltecos claman por ayuda. En plena crisis renuncia el jefe de epidemiología del Ministerio de Salud por diferencias internas en la cartera, esto demuestra una debilidad institucional, últimamente ha habido contagios dentro del palacio presidencial y en otros ministerios del gobierno, en hogares de niños que el gobierno tiene a su cargo, dentro del personal de salud, policías, que pareciera salirse del control.

The central government has made major efforts to manage the pandemic, although it falls short of the many problems triggered by the disease. The response has been characterized by contradictions, slowness, lack of inter-institutional coordination, corruption, and special interests, while the majority of Guatemalans cry for help. In the midst of the crisis, the chief of epidemiology for the Ministry of Health resigned over internal differences in the department, which demonstrates an institutional weakness. Lately, there have been infections in the presidential palace and other government ministries, in children’s homes that the government is in charge of, and among healthcare workers and police, which seem to be getting out of control. 

El Ministro de Salud está fuertemente criticado por no saber manejar la crisis, hay desabastecimiento en los hospitales, no hay equipo, incumplimiento de pago a varios trabajadores de la salud, los millones de prestamos adquiridos para enfrentar la pandemia se ha ejecutado un bajo porcentaje por la enorme burocracia. Por otro lado, se nombró a un comisionado para enfrentar el covid-19 tres meses después que se haya dado el primer caso, aún no se nota resultados del mismo.

The Minister of Health is strongly criticized for not knowing how to manage the crisis. There are shortages in hospitals: there isn’t equipment, there aren’t payments to healthcare workers, and only a small percentage of the millions in loans acquired to confront the pandemic have been executed due to the enormous bureaucracy. On the other hand, a commissioner was appointed to confront COVID three months after the first case, though no results have been noted so far. 

Cada nuevo paciente que se detecta por contagio, los envía a sus viviendas porque los hospitales están completamente llenos y colapsados, solamente atienden los más graves, aun así, muchos pacientes graves esperan varias horas por ser atendidos en los pasillos de los hospitales. Hay muchos contagiados que están fuera de las estadísticas oficiales que prefieren curarse como puedan en sus viviendas porque han perdido la esperanza en los hospitales.

Each new patient that tests positive is sent home because the hospitals are completely full and at a standstill, and are only attending to the most serious cases. Even so, many patients in serious condition wait to be seen for several hours in hospital corridors. There are many cases outside the official statistics who prefer to heal as they can at home because they have lost hope in hospitals.

El gobierno está siendo presionado por diferentes sectores para re-abrir la economía del país, algunos con fines económicos, otros por la necesidad de sobrevivencia quienes trabajan en la economía informal, otros sectores prefieren continuar con el confinamiento; por el lado del gobierno se está preparando protocolos para la normalidad, hay deseos por abrir centros comerciales, sector trasporte, iglesias, escuelas etc. Sin embargo, se intenta volver a la normalidad en medio de masivos contagios que hace más complicado tal decisión.

The government is being pressured from different sectors to re-open the economy, some for economic purposes, others for survival. Other sectors prefer to continue confinement. On the government’s side, re-opening protocols are being developed, there are desires to open malls, the transportation sector, churches, schools, etc. However, the attempt to return to normality in the middle of massive infections will complicate this decision. 

Familias que atiende EDELAC.

Las familias que EDELAC tiene contacto manifiestan disgusto, deseos de empezar a trabajar, aunque con bastante miedo, muchos se están endeudando por sobrevivir, otros comen dos veces al día, hay desesperación, miedo y una confusión. 

The families of EDELAC that we’ve contacted expressed disgust, and want to begin work even though they are afraid. Many are going into debt to survive, others are eating twice a day. There is desperation, fear, and confusion.

Otros padres de familia han decidido que sus hijos no vuelvan este año a la escuela por el miedo al contagio.

Other parents have decided that their children will not return to school this year out of fear for the pandemic.

En algunos sectores de la ciudad se empieza ver un clima de inseguridad, robos y asaltos por una mezcla entre necesidad de comer, abusos y delitos que aprovecha la delincuencia común.

In some sectors of the city, we’re beginning to see a climate of insecurity, robberies and assaults, due to a need to eat.

Hay varios municipios del occidente donde los alcaldes han cerrados las entradas para familias que no pertenecen al lugar, de tal manera que muchas familias se han quedado encerrados, en cual se desconoce el paradero de un pequeño porcentaje de ellos.

There are some western municipalities where the mayors have closed the town to outsiders, in a manner that many families have been locked up and the whereabouts of a small percentage is unknown.
