What to do in Xela

As volunteers living in Xela, we want to share a map of our favorite places to explore in and around the city.
Check our some of our favorite restaurants, cafes, bars, museums, and of course some day hikes!

Other social projects to support

Quetzaltrekkers partners with many other incredible social projects in Guatemala, and we want to promote their impact here.
Here you can read about some of their work, and click their name to read more about each organization.

Alma de Colores is a labor inclusion social project, creating fair employment opportunities for people with disabilities in and around San Juan at lake Atitlan. They have a very tasty cafe and artisan shop that are worth a visit.

Chico Mendes is a social project just outside of Xela dedicated to environmental justice for indigenous Mayan communities. In addition to a huge native tree nursery and multiple enormous planting projects, Chico Mendes offers a language school, homestays, guided trips, and more.

Trama Textiles is a social cooperative supporting women backstrap loom weavers from many communities around the Guatemalan highlands. Not only do they have an amazing selection of handmade products in their shop, but they also offer weaving classes and workshops.

Loma Linda is a small town just below the volcanoes of Xela towards the Pacific coast with a community tourism social project. Aside from being one of the best places to seek out the famous quetzal bird, the project offers lodging and local guides to explore the waterfalls in the area.
