A local project in Quetzaltenango environmental and social justice
Chico Mendes is a community-run nonprofit in the highland village of Pachaj, just outside of Xela. Founded in 1998 with a call to action, three friends planted trees on the weekends, sowing the seeds of environmental justice in their indigenous community. Today, Chico Mendes continues reshaping the world, and their team of local youth and international volunteers work together to harness the power of hands, voices, and hearts, planting trees in the mountains of Cantel.
There are many ways to be involved with Chico Mendes, by volunteering in their native tree nursery, joining in planting efforts, or simply becoming a donor. In addition, the project offers language school and local family homestay experiences, along with environmental hikes and education.
What to Expect:
Stay with a local homestay family, study Spanish or K’iche, and help out in the plant nursery or in the beautiful mountains of Cantel. Reach out to Chico Mendes directly to find out about current volunteer and language school opportunities. Typically a minimum of 5 days is necessary for a homestay.
