Summary
Climb high above the Xela Valley to the summit of Volcan Santa Maria. Standing at 3,772 meters, this striking stratovolcano offers views of the surrounding Highlands and Guatemala’s famous volcanic line in both directions.
Below sits Santiaguito: one of Guatemala’s most actively erupting volcanoes and Santa Maria’s current vent complex. If we’re lucky, our steep hike through the volcanoes covering pine forest may be rewarded by an eruption from Santiaguito during lunch! If you are looking for a hiking adventure to fill your day and interested in learning about its impactful eruptive history, climbing this volcano is certainly a great option.
Please be advised that this is a steep hike, so individuals with knee problems may find it very difficult. Please reach out to us with any questions, or, consider our half-day hike to the Santiaguito Mirador.
